You actually can become a more creative thinker over time. Here are some strategies that really work, especially if you force yourself to do them a lot...
- Get involved in creative activities...whatever quacks your duck
- When faced with a decision or problem, get in the habit of asking yourself. "Well, what's possible..."
- When entertaining possibilities, turn off your brain's internal critic, you know, the one that says..."that would be silly..."
- When entertaining possibilities, push for quantity...many more ideas than usual
- Look at real cool new things, then ask yourself, "How could I do something like that in this whole different area?"
- Frequently stop a habit and start a new one. Example, cancel a magazine subscription and start a new one in an area you haven't explored before.
- Keep an open mind, set aside judgement as you're listening to other people's ideas and opinions
- When faced with a flawed idea, instead of saying "that won't work" say "I have some concerns, how can we address them to improve the idea?"

I draw, or I play with my kids. Being around kids really make you learn to be more creative. When I first started I felt a little strange, and a little childish. But now I'm more comfortable, and we make up all kinds of games, crafts, and stories, obstacle courses, etc. It makes me feel good because they are learning creativity as well., and it's fun, too! Being creative this way with my kids sort of opened up my mind to being more creative elsewhere. The trick is to just find one thing that will open up your mind, and get you to begin to create ideas on your own. This one thing may be kids, art, poetry, photography, building things, etc.Once the mind is open to creativity, you will be creative in all areas of your life.

I like to do alot of things to be creative.. I read books, write poetry, try new things like a new food you havent tried before or make up a recipe on the spot, imagine little scenarios throughout the day, try and invent new ways to do everyday things, make crafts or build things, invent a new kind of birdfeeder for example, try and fix things that are broken, rearrange furniture just for fun, make your own art to hang on the walls, if you have a pet think up a new unique trick to teach them, try eating your food with chopsticks instead of forks(lol thats my thing right now, the rule is I can only use chopsticks), try and learn something new everyday.. throughout the day if you notice something you dont really know anything about when you get home research it on the computer, personalize your computer desktop once a week with new backgrounds, colours, fonts etc just for fun.. play a new boardgame or video game, get a new computer program and learn how to do something new like make animations, edit photographs, make music, make a card on your pc for someone you know, learn how to play a musical instrument, try and learn another language, if you have a certain expertise ask people you know if they can use it.. for example if you know alot about PCs ask if your friends have something they need fixed etc
Creativity is a wonderful thing and we can add so much more to our lives just by using our imagination.
PS I agree with the person above who mentioned Science-fiction I can honestly say people who read, watch, write, sci-fi are so much more creative than the average person. Read the Dune series by Frank Herbert you will see what I mean. Don't knock Sci-fi geeks we have a great imagination and alot of creativity, so much so that it freaks other people out, because they arent used to so much of those qualities..lol

Find a left-handed person. Just talk to them and see how they are. Another way is to be like a child; be thrilled by little things...or be curious like a crazy scientist.
What do I do? Look around your world with new eyes. Wonder...instead of saying "it's impossible" say "it is possible." Read some Science Fiction, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and take a ride on the wild side!
My question is how do you stop being creative and live like a er...mmm "normal" person? Good luck!

That part of your brain is like any muscle in your body. Use it and it gets stronger. Just know that there are different ways of being creative. Designing a bridge that won't collapse is just as creative as an awe inspiring painting.

You know, just think outside the box. Find the impossible things and ask yourself..."Is it really impossible?" =)
