The country in which women contributed the most was the USSR, where thousands of women served as combat pilots. The 588th night bomber regiment was especially feared by the Germans, who called them the "Night Witches." 29 women pilots were named Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest honor given in the USSR.

The easiest thing to point out is Rosie the Riveter. Women contributed in many ways, but the easiest way to say it is that they moved into the plants and factories to fill the jobs left open by men that were fighting the war overseas. They worked the machine shops that supplied the war effort.

Basically, without women as mothers whose sons fought the battles of WW2 and served in many capacities, there wouldn't have been any soldiers, sailors, marines, doctors, etc.to win the war, and they stepped in and took their husband's and son's places on the home front - plus, serving as nurses, WACs, and other military positions.
Each job that a woman handled freed one more able bodied male to serve.

When men went away to war, they worked in the factories. They also served in the military services as well. They basically helped keep the country going while they young men were in the services.
