I am planning to get DirectTV. I was wondering if it is possible to record a show from the DirectTV box onto a VCR or DVD recorder and then watch a different channel at the same time.

My TV has the PIP feature.

Nope! You can only watch the same program as you're recording, unless you have another, separate box for the recorder! You can opt for a DirecTv DVR however and do as you wish.

You need to find out how many signal outputs the DirecTV box you are going to get has. If there are two discrete outputs, then you can record one and watch the other. If not, then you will need to request two separate boxes.
