The problem is two fold.
Part of it is on the IT guy. They know computers, and it *does* take a special kind of people to get very comfortable with them. There's a bit of a superiority complex there, feeding their ego.
Part of it is on the common user, who often simply just "give up" without even trying, or they simply don't use the skill often enough to remember it, and thus end up asking the problem again, and again, and again. Some of the stuff is very "obvious"... to the right people.
My personal support rule is simple. If I have to show you the same thing three times, I must assume you are a MORON. However, if you're a true first-timer I'll take my time to help you out to make sure you actually "get it", not just memorize the steps by rote.
Personal horror story: we keep HTML pages as ISO9001 process control documents for inspecting certain products. We found that some products did not get a full inspection, like only the first random number of 10 rule were applied, but we could not find a pattern, so we had a guy WATCH the QC inspector reading the inspection document. We finally figured out that the HTML page is so long, it actually scrolled off the bottom (scroll bar to the right side) but nobody taught the QC inspectors how to recognize (or use) the scroll bar, so they never recognized there's more to the QC document. :P

Usually, it because the user doesn't take the time to research the problem and try to solve it themselves. Most IT guys are pretty understanding of people that are not computer-savvy. However, a person that runs to us for every little thing without even trying, or even for the same thing more than once, is sure to get the short fuse real quick. We've invested too much time and effort into becoming technology gurus to have our intelligences abused by an ignorant user.

This is a good question. IT is a very demanding environment and techies often are bogged down. It is all to easy to forget that just because you do something every day without thinking about it, other people do not share your particular field of knowledge. We are not all bad, I have come across some pretty temperamental users too!!

Because there are people who will bug you to help them with a question that you have answered for them for ten times already but they can't be bothered to remember it. Not when you're just a phone call away.

You should report him to his manager. He probably does it a lot with everyone. He probably treats women at work like dirt also.
That IT guy lacks communication and the ability to put himself in others shoes.
