I've been working with my company now for about a year and, I want to look for another job. I'm afraid though just because this is my first real job since I've finished college in my field (accounting) and since I've been here, I feel as though the benefits are good and the money pays the bills. I have great leeway on my job meaning no one is down my throat. Basically I call the shots by making my own hours and not clocking out for lunch and things like that. So I'm scared to leave and go to another company with better pay and better benefits just because the supervisors may be like hawks and things may not be as nice? What should I do?

Ask yourself what about your current job is making you unhappy enough to look for another job. If it's money, talk with them, they may be willing to re-negotiate your salary. If it's self-fulfillment or lack of challenge, then consider asking them to expand your duties, look for an interesting project to take on. It take a year or more to really grow into a position. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side.

You sound satisfied with your job right now, so i wouldn't let your managers know that you are looking at other options because most times it gets ugly. If you are really intent on finding another job, discreetly apply there, but before applying, ask a couple people who work there, their honest opinion about how it is there. Most folks will just tell you how it is, but to be safe, ask more then one person. If you seem to think that it is ok, then go ahead and apply...Just as a side note though, there is an old proverb that goes something like this, "you dont understand what you have until its gone..." so you might not want to rush finding a new job cause it most likely means giving up the freedom that you take for granted. (ex. not clocking out, etc.)

How much better are the benefits and pay at the other job? A low stress level is worth alot in and of itself. If you're happy where you are, why not stay until you have more experience and can command a significantly higher salary? There is also the option of asking for a raise where you already work. Don't be hasty, good jobs are hard to find.

It's your first job out of college, and your 20's is a time of exploration. No one out there will fault you for looking for new challenges or better work environments.

Just make a real detailed list of what is important to you and what you are trying to avoid, so you will make a good decision when looking at the next office environment.

Just like people ask you in the interview what are your good and bad qualities, you can certainly ask that to a potential employer so you know what you are getting yourself into.

It never hurts to keep searching for jobs. Bascially what you need to think about is what is the most important thing about a job to you...is it the money and benefits, is it the freedom of not having to answer for every little thing, is it a job that you enjoy going to each day???? You have to decide what is the most important thing to you and then you should have your answer.
