Using thicker oil would not be the answer. You don't get as much flow and it doesn't get into tighter spaces as well.
If your oil was in bad shape, the new stuff might have cleaned out some sludge and loosened up the clearances a tad.
Stick with the oil the book recommends. The oil pump and flow volume and clearances determine what oil you need. Not some nitwit telling you to use thicker oil. Too thick oil can reduce the amount you get in needed places, like lifters.

Go buy a pint or quart of Marvel Mystery Oil - comes in a Red can. Add 1/2 pint to the crankcase and things should quiet down. Marvel Mystery Oil has some detergents and special ingredients to free up lifters and clean things up a bit. I had a 1984 Trans-Am with the 305 V8 and from time to time after an oil change it would get noisy. This always did the trick. You might also consider on the next oil change putting in some Wynns+ cleaner before draining the oil. This will help clean up the crankcase and flush the lifter passages. Hydraulic lifters can sometime fail to pump up properly after an oil change, but if you have solid lifters, you need to see a mechanic and pronto...

Hope this helps...

As noted elsewhere here you have used the wrong oil. I would recommend another oil change and you'll want to change the oil filters as well. Be warned though his could indicate a bigger problem. You might want to consider a garage or a clued up mate having a look.

Used too thin an oil. 20W 50 might have been better.
