I don't recall that the story of Hester Prynne dealt with economics at all. Set in colonial times, though, one would assume an agrarian economy of free enterprise, with money, trade, landed aristocrats, tradesmen, farmers, maybe slavery somewhere in the country, pre-technological but post-feudal type of deal.
