my friend go into a car accident and then discovered her car insurance had just expired a few weeks ago without her knowledge. the company (geico) has refused to cover us even though she paid right away. wondering if there are any legal options to make sure we're still covered against claims against us.

As an insurance agent I know that an insurance company will absolutely not pay anything if a policy is expired. The only way she can get compensation is if she has proof that she paid money before the expiration date that they say it cancelled on. If she has nothing to show then she will get nothing. No money = no coverage. Sorry. Good luck to her.

Sorry, but insurance companies, like every other business send in expiration notices. The only way they canceled it without her knowledge is, if she misplaced the mail before reading it or it got lost in the mail before she got it. Either way, that is hard to prove. There is no legal way they have to pay. She will have to pay whatever the accident costs out of her pocket. I hope for her sake it's not too much and no one got hurt. Otherwise, she'd be broke for a long time.

Your friend just didn't pay her insurance bill and was canceled. Usually she get get reinstated with in 30 days but it sounds like she was at fault. We use to have Geico and they were the cheapest around but the most difficult to deal with regarding any type of claim. We would get put on hold after hold and then disconnected etc etc. They were the worst insurance company I have ever been associated with. Good luck to her! And her cheap Geico rates will increase big time now.

The answer is you are screwed... You can't pay for insurance after. In some states, there are notification requirements when you are expired/dropped. That would be your only hope that they didn't comply
