I have just bought a new laptop with Vista and its great. However when my partner upgraded from XP it was a hassle as he had to add more memory, upgrade his graphics card to a Vista compatible card, he cant yet obtain drivers for some of the hardware he uses and not all the software he has is Vista compatible... he is considering going back to XP and waiting a few months until all the issues are hopefully sorted then trying again.
You can check if your PC is ready for upgrade by going to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=42b5ac83-c24f-4863-a389-3ffc194924f8&DisplayLang=en and downloading Windows Vista Advisor which will to help you identify whether your pc is ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista, and which edition of Windows Vista to get, and which features of Windows Vista will be able to run on your pc

I have upgraded to Vista Ultimate, I would suggest staying with Windows XP unless you are really good with computers. Vista has been having driver issues and not being really experienced with computers would make it hard to deal with some of the errors.
Also your computer will need to be really good to handle vista. I'm not 100% sure of the requirements but i would suggest a dual core processor 2+ghz(not celeron), 1gb+ ram, and a 256mb+ video card.
All in all, I would say wait a little longer before you get it.

Stay with XP for now. Apart from the fact that it's too costly to upgrade now, I'm sure there will still be upgrade and system problems that would only come up a few months after the launch.
One annoying problem that surfaced within the last few weeks was that Vista isn't complatible with iTunes.
One of my friends who jumped on the bandwagon and upgraded to Vista as soon as it came out had a very unfortunate experience of losing almost 40% of the songs in his iTunes library. 30% of the songs in his library automatically went to
different folders and places it took him days to search for everything and restore his files. And yes, he's never found the lost files/songs.
Even iTunes / Apple themselves are discouraging their customers from upgrading to Vista.

Apparently Vista takes up a lot more memory space than XP, so you may need to add more memory depending on your computer spec.
I would wait a good few months to see how Vista goes down. Do some searching on the net and see if there are any reviews.

vista is great, but i upgraded my other p.c. and found that it had some hardware problems. also you need at least 512mb of ram (more like a gig). if you have a xp disc, then borrow a vista upgrade disc from a friend boot your computer from vista cd/dvd. this way you can test it on your system for a few days before deciding. If you dont like it reinstall xp, if you like it keeop vista and pay bill gates his next million

Try a dual installation to test your hardware compatibility. You can still use XP untill you are comfortable with Vista.
So thats what TVR stands for, Tried Vista: Rubbish.

Wait. even if you prefer Windows, wait. the Drivers aren't good, but if you absolutely must have Vista, do not get the 64 bit version.

Wait wait wait, its compatible with very little at the moment, eg, drivers, xp was the same, when everything is reported to Microsoft as bugs etc, and they bring out patches and fixes, my advice is wait.
