Homemade baby blanket
Personally, I loved the Ocean Wonders Aquarium that attaches to the crib and child can turn on and off by himself. My son used his for 3 years, then passed it on to baby sister.

Diapers first and for most, then if you really want to buy clothes by the bigger sizes I know it may seem weird but babies grow so fast that having the 6-9 and 9-12months clothes are great. If you want to buy a big item I would go for a bassinet (esp. one that can lift up and carry the top around it is very useful), a bouncer seat, or a swing. These three items were life savers for me when my kids couldn't fall asleep and I was at the end of my rope. If you want to help mom more buy her a massage or manicure/pedicure (only if she will like it) because she will have a day when she needs to just get away.

If you know who else is going to the baby shower, maybe you could go in on a gift.
What about a small baby 'tub' filled with newborn diapers, baby powder and oil, hooded
towel, wash cloths and little shirts. Something nice would be a little something special for
the mother. The mother tends to be forgotten--maybe bath bubbles. Just a suggestion.
Maybe you could add soft plush toys as well.

Diapers are always helpful,
There is an item we received as a gift and it sits on the crib. It has a light and also plays music or nature sounds. It helps with soothing our child when she goes to sleep. I think it also has a vibrating system, but we never put that in.

You should make her a diaper cake!!! Look up the instructions online and then fill it with as much stuff as your budget will allow!! They are great gifts and you can put all the little things all parents need with their first child....that they don't know they need (nail clippers, gas drops, carseat toys, Bedtime Music CD, Baby Bath, etc.)

If you buy clothes, I'd buy them for a year after the season your friend's baby will need it. That way, when your friend is getting all of this clothes for a newborn (babies are usually only in newborn clothes for a week or two, some are too big right away) and baby until he is 6 mos old, she'll have some special clothes for when he's older too.

speaking from experience. Dont get her useless stuff. Get her stuff she will REALLY NEED>
I had 2 baby showers and it seems like i had SO MANY stuffed toys, blankets, and clothes while i appreciated it alot 2 weeks before baby came i was out shopping for burb cloths, a lil bath tub, and some littler things like that.
A suggestion would be to put together a little box of mixed items.
Burp cloths, wash cloths, and a little hooded baby towell
Baby powder, shampoo, and baby lotion.
All of those were things i wished i would have gotten!!! Put it in a really cute basket with a liner ( they sell them everywhere from $5-$25) Then she will have something to organize with in the nursury as well!!

personally i would go with a cute outfit and a toy. And if you are going for the outfit i often make sure to go with something out of the ordinary like if you were to go to a baby shower for someone who was about to have a girl, dont get them that usual pink dress go with a green or a yellow. And also make sure that its a few months old because just about everyone gives people clothes for newborns so go with like a 6 months.

diapers... seriously, babies go through diapers like crazy, so the mom will need a ton of them.. we also usually buy a couple cute outfits, but make sure they're NOT for newborns, but a little older... b/c most people will get stuff for newborns, and they'll have so many clothes that the baby will grow out of soon anyway, and then they'll have to go out and buy all new outfits.. so i think it's nice to plan ahead a little... also ask if there's anything she needs... or find out how the baby's room will be decorated, that could help you choose some blankets, stuffed animals, toys, etc...
