Find a topic that you're passionate about, then find a poet who writes about it. For instance, if you like horror, there's Edgar Allen Poe, and if you are against death and dying in wartime, read Wilfred Owen or Siegfried Sassoon. You'll find their poetry on-line. Try googling the poet's name.

Yes, lots of people like poetry. I edit The Verse Marauder, a webzine dedicated to just poetry from different writers.
