to 'act the martyr' as they say round here is to voluntarily burden the weight of the world on your shoulders whilst telling everyone else 'I'm fine,dont worry about me' etc etc etc even though you're looking for their sympathies!!!

People tend to get annoyed by that behaviour fairly easily!

An actual martyr is someone who gives a lot up, sometimes their life for a cause they believe in

don't intentionally victimize yourself. Someone who makes themself a martyr is typically looking for respect or pity for their selfless act. In fact, when the motivation for the action is attention rather than the better good, the action becomes selfish. The bible says that it is good to suffer, because it brings us closer to God, but that we should not intentionally make ourselves suffer because it's an act of vanity.

When someone exhibits martyrdom behavior, they take on the role of being the victim, because they have "sacrificed" their needs for another. This an attempt to control another.

don't always be sacrificing yourself for others, never thinking of your needs and desires, especially if you are looking for praise for doing this.

it means :stop suffering so courageously or quietly, OR stop pretending as if you are.
