For Hybrids, the Honda Insight gets the best gas milage of any car you can buy. However it does this at the price of driveability. It's not the most comfortable or easiest car to drive but it will get upwards of 60 mpg.
The prius is next. It's a little bigger and more practical than the Insight but it will probably average in the low to mid 40's as for miles per gallon. That may not be worth the extra cost.
If you don't want a hybrid, the Honda Fit is the best small economy car as rated by both Car & Driver and Consumer Reports. It blows everything else out of the water in vitrtually all catagories. It also made the list of top 10 greenest cars in the US this year.
Diesel cars do get better miles per gallon ratings , however this is because Diesel is a more dense fuel. They aren't any "greener" than any other car. In fact they actually pollute alot more than most cars which is why you can't buy a new diesel car in the US as of 2007. Any VW diesel would have to be a used model.

If you can get a hold of one there are cars that run on water and electricity. You might have to build one to get one though or pay a high price.
But if that is not an option a hybrid car might be a better option.
Also talk to a car dealer they might be able to give some ideas.

A Toyota Prius is the car, however any new diesel car is better than a gas powered car. Check out VW for a great selection. And get a car alarm!

depends how you look at it. modern hybrid cars will claim to be the greenest and give a good mpg but looking at the wider perspective, the pollution created in the manufacture of the battery in the car is greater than any benefit the car will have in its lifetime. get a small engine car like a smart car or something.

Depends how you measure, if you use what's known as 'dust to dust' measurement i.e. the energy used to design, build, run & recycle a car then surprisingly a JEEP Wrangler is greenest. http://www.askaprice.com/torque-article.asp?article=As_%C2%B4green%C2%B4_as_they_get_-_the_4x4_Jeep_Wrangler&item=2526
If your looking for something small & frugal then Citroen C1 or Toyota Aygo 1.0 petrol have returned good MPG in tests.

My daughter is also 'Environmentally aware'
this topic was discussed quite recently and she has now declare she wants a 'Gee Whizz' car - apparently it's Eco friendly! However I have never heard of it, there again I am her 'Mother' which means I must be ancient!
