Of course they were! That's the BEST record in history topped off with a title, and the LEADING player of that team MICHAEL JORDAN had got every MVP possible that year(all-star, season, finals). So no matter if it was in the 90's, 80's , 60's, 2000's, or whatever era, it's in the RECORD BOOKS as the BEST RECORD in history.....and like this certain MJ hater ( Tweety ) says, THE RECORDS DON'T LIE!!!!!! The 96 BULLS IS THE GREATEST TEAM IN HISTORY LED BY THE GREATEST PLAYER IN HISTORY, MJ ( 3 MVPS THAT YEAR)!!!!!

P.S. Everyone Tweety is this MJ hater that dig in MJ's record book & bring up his worst years against him. His/Hers favorite quote is, "THE RECORDS DON'T LIE & THERE IS NO EXCUSES"! Well Tweety, how about that record for you? The record books makes 72-10 the best team in history, and the record books show that the team was led by MJ (All 82 games & 3 MVPs that year). If MJ takes credit for his losing seasons, well it's only fair that he takes credit for the winning seasons!

WOW....BILL H, GREAT ANSWER!!

Not that this 'IDIOT would have any idea of what you're talking about, though. LOL

The 72 Lakers would have crushed the 96 Bulls. Wilt vs. Luc Longley?!?! That would not have been pretty. Or was Luc still "developing?"

James, the 72-10 team was NOT even the best of the Bulls title teams. The 92 team was much better, even your hero, MJ has said that.

As far as the greatest team ever, I would go with the 86 Celtics ( Bird, McHale, Parish, Walton up front...DJ & Ainge backcourt.). They went 67-15 through the regular season, including 40-1 at home ( even the 72 win Bulls couldn't match that ). They steamrolled through the playoffs, dropping only one game, before defeating the Rockets 4-2.

This team would have mopped the floor with the 96 Bulls. They were way too strong up front for anyone, played tough defense, and were one of the greatest passing teams ever. Plus, there were only 23 teams then, not 29 when the Bulls won...less teams = more talent.

The 72 Lakers, also benefited from expansion ( Portland & Cleveland were in their second year and the Lakers went 9-1 against them). Although they were an awesome team, winning 33 straight ( another thing the 72 win Bulls never came close to doing), I think the 86 Celtics and their frontline would prevail.

The 67 Philly 76ers would probably be my second choice, with a younger Wilt, HOFers Hal Greer and Billy Cunningham and Luke Jackson. Also the 87 Lakers , the first of the back to back title teams, would have demolished the Bulls.

Once again, you're giving Jordan more credit than he deserves. If you take Rodman off that team, they DON'T win 72 games, and they DON'T win a championship. Remember, they couldn't get past the second round the previous year with all the same players, minus Rodman.

Irregardless, they played in a watered-down league against mediocre talent. They would not have come close to 72 wins had they played in the 1980's, even Rodman has said that.

And where do you get off saying Jordan takes credit for his losing seasons? All you do is make excuses for his LOSING......he was "developing", he was "rusty", he was "old" , etc.....

Typical of Jordan worshipers. He takes all the credit for winning, and none of the blame for LOSING.

I'd have to say it's the team whose record they beat: the 1972-73 LA Lakers. The Lakers went 69-13 that year. Their roster boasted Hall-of-Famers Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor (although he retired early that year), Bill Sharman and Gail Goodrich. As a team they shot 49% from the field while opponents shot 43% against them (while commiting only 20 fouls per game) and shot 73% from the line - even with Wilt. They averaged 56 rebounds per game and 27 assists per game. They averaged 121 points a game while giving up 108 for a 13 point differential.

While the Bulls have the better season record, there were more teams which translates to a dilution of talent. In particular it was due to two new expansion teams (Grizzlies and Raptors) that year. Combine that with scheduling changes instituted that year (playing teams in your division more and the other divisions less instead of all equally) that would count for an easy 10 wins (2 from the Grizzlies in Vancouver then and 8 from the Raptors). There are 30 teams in the NBA which translates to 360 players (30 teams x 12 players). In 1972, there were only 22 teams (264 players) and no new expansion teams. If you remove the bottom 100 players and then divide the remaining talent equally, you'd have a much more competitive league making wins harder to come by.

And they did win the NBA title that year. Sweeping the Bulls in the first round, beating the Bucks (with Oscar Robertson and league MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) 4-2 in the second round and beating the Knicks 4-1 in the finals.

I'd put the 72-73 Lakers up against any team in history and they'd come out ahead; especially in a 7 game finals-like series.

No other team will ever win 72 regular season games in one season. The guy that thinks Dallas will do it is wrong, because the Bulls of 95-96 had a much better defense to go along with a dominant offense than any team has now. The guy that thinks the Bulls come after 4 San Antonio teams should have his 2 points reversed for that answer.

Best Bulls Team Ever

the only reason why they had such a good record is because there were no teams that could match up to the greatness of Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen. The best team ever is the Mavericks this season. They have an all around solid team and Dirk Nowitski is becoming a great leader. Also, Jason Terry, Devin Harris, and Josh Howard are some of the greatest supporting cast memebers ever. this team is full of greatness, not the 96 Bulls.

No doubt the had the greatest players in the NBA ever and no one will ever and i repeat EVER beat that record.
Jordan didn't have it easy either they had a rough cause they let things go in the playoffs with hard fouls that would be flagerent fouls now and he was and will be the greatest player of all time evn Magic and Bird say he is the greatest! Ali said he was the greatest and thats ALI!!

please check in to see if your brain tumor has gotten any larger..best record, does not equal best TEAM...they might have been the best BULL team of all time...there are several TEAMS that would kick jordan and his bunch off the court...they couldnt match up with the celtic laker sixers teams of the 80's..or chamberlains warrior or laker teams..the knicks 70/73..in these times of a 30 team league and watered down talent that bulls team could not deal with real teams that had talent all the way to the 12th man..

Joke question. The best 80's lakers and Celtics teams would have blown them away as well as any other team in league history.
There simply is no competition for these 80's teams.
