A compass is a magnet that is attracted the magnetic north pole, when you are in the northern hemisphere.
As for those of you who think it is useless because of the modern electronics, you are sadly mistaken. When mapping a geologic region, a compass is far more accurate than your hand held GPS or your cell phone. Unless you plan on paying thousands of dollars or tens of thousands of dollars in some cases, a $300 Brunton pocket transit is your most accurate option. And this does not even take into consideration the times when you are in regions where satellite signals are unavailable, such as in a mine or even in the forest or jungle where the tree canopy blocks the signal.

A magnetic indicator for finding direction which almost always point to the magnetic north pole if above the equator and points to the magnetic south below the equator. Quite useful for explorers and ships at sea. Better ones have bearing indicator lines and degree markings on them.
