a standard head-to-toe physical exam, including measuring your height, weight, and blood pressure. she'll also examine your genital area for any suspicious lesions that may indicate an infection or STD. then she'll insert a speculum into your vagina and examine your cervix and vagina as well. if it's been more than a year since your last pap smear, she'll do one now to screen for cervical cancer or abnormal cell changes. during this exam she may also take a cell culture on a cotton swab to check for gonorrhea and chlamydia. if you've had any abnormal discharge or itching, she may also take a culture for vaginal infections, such as trichomoniasis. after removing the speculum, your practitioner will do a pelvic exam by inserting her fingers into your vagina and checking your ovaries, uterus, and cervix for any masses, tenderness, or other problems.

as far as the loosing weight, thats normal so dont worry. i lost weight, and so do many woman, in their first trimester. so if you doctor didnt seem concerned, then don't be either. that was always my way of thinking!

they do say that the faster the heart beat, that its a girl. HOWEVER that is just one of those little sayings. both my twins had heartbeats over 140 (when its supposed to be a girl) and one was a boy. lol so it was right in one twin in my case.

they might schedule the ultrasound at your next appointment, they will usually do one around that time, if not a few weeks later. so either the next appointment or the one following.

congrats and good luck!!!

Don't go by the heartbeat. I was told that the faster the heart beat the chances are it would be a girl. That is not true during pregnancy...it is true when children are born and are growing out side of the body. A head to toe physical is just that. Your doctor is going to asses your over all health from head to toe. Breast exam, the "other" exam and to just ensure that all the "T's are crossed and all the "I's are dotted. Your doctor may do the ultra sound himself or have it scheduled after the full exam. But you should be getting an ultrasound soon. Good Luck to you!

The heartrate myth is just that - a myth. It says that a faster heartrate indicates a girl. My baby's heartrate is always 160s-170s and I am having a boy. A head to toe physical from a gynocological view would probably entail a breast exam and a pap smear and culture. Of course your heartrate and blood pressure will be checked. You'll likely have a fetal anatomy scan at 20 weeks or later unless you are high risk or have complications.

My doctor refused to tell me the sex until 20 weeks, trying to ensure that all the baby's genitalia were most visable. But since 18 weeks is so close, and you can *technically* tell by 16 weeks, she could. But I wouldn't get your hopes up too high- I was sure my doctor would tell me at 16 weeks, but he refused. :-( You can always call the office and just ask what their policy on sex determination is.
As for the heartbeat... unfortunately, there's no sure-fire way to tell the sex of the baby except ultrasound or an amniocentesis. My daughter's heartbeat stayed pretty constant- around 140-150... but my husband's cousin had a little boy, and his was always above 150bpm...
I'll tell you though- there's nothing like that moment when the doctor says, "... yup- it's a...." I cried the moment I heard I was having a girl. (everyone swore I was having a boy.. myself and my dad were the only two who were right. :-) ) So always trust your mommy intuition.
Best of luck!

ive always heard that if you eat alot of dairy products it a girl, alot of meat is a boy. i ate cheese alot and had a girl. my first ultrasound was at 12 weeks. head to toe physical is where she will check your breast for lumps, check your cervix, make sure nothing on your body is swollen(i.e feet, ankles), do something like a pap smear(or maybe it is a pap smear im not sure), and push on your uterus to see how the baby is. you lost and gain weight all the way through your pregnancy so thats not really a big problem, unless you weigh round about the same or under what you did before pregnancy or you have gain 60 or more pounds during pregnancy.

the myth about the heartbeat is not always true ... I just had a boy and his heartbeat was always around 160

Chances are you will not have a ultrasound at the next vist ... you will probably have one between 22-24wks (that is when you will be able to find out the sex).

By head-2-toe visit your Dr probably means that she is going to check your breast, do a pelvic exam, and probably some lab work.

Congrats and good luck

Well they say that a low heart rate can indicate a boy HR 120-140, and higher would be a girl. This is just an old wives tale because my babies heart rate is always in the 160's and I am having a boy

Well the myth is that a faster heartbeat means a girl. So yours would be a girl according to the myth. This was actually true for my pregnancy with my daughter. Her hearbeat was always around 160.

It's an old wives' tale and isn't accurate for predicting baby's sex.
Ultrasound is usually done around 18-20 weeks.
YOu'll just have a regular physical - blood pressure, listen to heart, pap smear, etc.
