I have had several fancy rats, and think they are wonderful little critters. Biggest problem I have is their life span, a little too short.

If science could do it, and somehow make it possible for pet rats to have longer lifespans (say something equavalent to a house cat) how would you react?

I would think some people would have issues and such with the morality of doing this. But somehow I see more value in this than making it possible for Hugh Heffener to father yet another child (thank you viagra:)

On the other hand I think it would be great to have the furry critter for longer than 2 or three years.

I think it would be great if they lived longer, but I'm not sure science should try to change rats to have longer life spans. Rats are like that for a reason, just enjoy your little friends while you have them

I had a rat that lived for 4 years.
Her name was Eleanor Rigby but I just called her Rigby.
I had her throughout college.

I just recently said good-bye to two wonderful gerbils. They only lived to be 3 and a half. I really wish they could have stayed around longer.

I now have a guinea pig (my first)....
he is supposed to have a longer life span than a rat or gerbil.
That will be nice not to have to say good-bye so soon.

I would love to have the life of one of my pets expanded. Myself, I have had two rat pals in my lifetime so far: Rumble and Fred. They were both very smart and very cute. I had Rumble for at least four years until his death. . .However, I do not think that it would be right for someone to genetically alter a life, even if that life belonged to that of a rodent. Even though we will miss them, I would let nature go on as it always has. . .

I wish that they lived longer. I had 2 hairless rats that I got in their later years. I miss my little naked friends!

My snake don't care... he don't let them live for more than a few minutes.
