to release the tension/stiffness there. I started in elementary because the kid next to me was doing it and I liked the sound. Then it became sort of an addiction because if you don't crack your knuckles then they're not as limber, & it just drives you nuts!!! I moved on to my toes, & now I find myself in the middle of the day taking off my shoes just to crack them (because they get stiff & it gets hard to walk if you're wearing tight shoes)

if you haven't started, don't. Although it won't cause arthritis, it can cause you to have a loss of grip as you get older.

For most people it's a bad habit and nervous tick. Don't do it if you don't have to it can, over the course of a life time, cause painful damage to your joints. I have arthritis and it relieves uncomfortable pressure in my hands on occasion. In reality it's only making things worse.

Harmless habit. I place my fingers on the sides of my head above my ears and press...all eight pop at once. Then I do the thumbs in unison. Pretty darn loud.

It's how my coworkers knew I was getting ready to do some serious research and not to mess with me.

It relieves tension. It can also become a nervous habit. Try it.

It's pointless...I can't stand it when people do it. What they don't realize is when they're older they're hands are going to start shaking when they try to grab or hold on to something...kinda funny actually.
