Actually it ain't that good these days, as Political Correctness has crept into the system, sent discipline downhill, and generally made a mess bigger than you'd believe possible.......

Otherwise, if they still used discipline (so the kids could no longer virtually get away with murder with nothing being able to be done to stop them).. and could still be bothered to teach things properly it would be. Also kids start school earlier in the UK....... like 4yrs old, while I think they start at 6yrs old in the US..... and school day runs from 8:50am 'til 3:35pm (when they're more awake), while I think in the States I've had friends say they started at 8am (while still half asleep).

I recently moved back from greece, where i attended a british school there. i'm now in a public american school. these are the reasons i think the american school system is better:
1) They have no set curiculum. At all. Ok, maybe the IB students, but when i went there you didn't pick you're classes, you were either in the higher or lower group. When i moved back to america they didn't know what classes i had taken.
2)I skipped second grade in USA, and was in the same grade as my brother. But when i went to the british school, they said that they were going to have to put me back a grade because of my age. Meanwhile, my brother was doing what i should be doing, and i wasted a year of school learning stuff i already knew.
3)Who says the teachers are better? Some of my teachers in both schools sucked.
4)The uniforms are a waste of money. I don't care what anyone says about kids dressing inapropriately because they don't have uniforms, it is very boring to wear the same clothes to school day after day. after day. after day. and girls HAVE to wear skirts in the summer. that is so sexist and weird.
5)They speak a different language, practically.
6)They have 3 "terms" and way too many vacations.
7)They have no idea what a GPA is.

And why do most countries have better schools than us? You mean like, countries where genocide is going on and people don't even have houses?
Sorry for seeming so rude, but that's my opinion.

Although this is by no means the only answer, one reason surely must be that the American teachers are not allowed to be open-minded about religion at all. Creationism is not allowed to be taught to my belief and not allowing children the right to refuse religion, or have their own opinion must be deprived in some way, which could lead to less intelligent, curious, inquisitive adults growing up.
P.S. In no way am I attacking religion, there is no point in my argument that I state that I do not believe in God, I simply believe that children have the right to challenge what is said, without being given reason, and sorry if I offend anybody on the delicate subject of religious belief.

Union's are better in America. The teachers get in and you can't get the bad ones out.

I worked with a jerk who basically did nothing. We are itinerant teachers. He'd call the secretary to say that he'd be starting out at such and such school. Then the secretary would say to me, "Doesn't he know I can tell where he's calling from?" He'd be calling from home and his destination was 45 minutes away - in other words he was really late - but no matter they kept this jerk of a teacher employed at $60,000 for 184 days of work.

Duh, that's why the british, and about every other country in the world is smarter than the Americans. They learn things faster, and their teachers are better. It's actually like a no play policy. They work a lot when I was over there.
