Little children that age are still snuggly and like to be hugged. It makes them feel secure and loved, and this is really important to them. If there is a rocking chair, rock him. If not, sort of sway back and forth (my daughter loves that!).

Don't worry about looking foolish. Kids don't think that at all! In fact, the more of a clown you are, the more they will like you and the better you will get along. Play with them, use squeaky voices...they'll eat you up!

I probably wouldn't wrestle around with them. My kids love that, but not all kids do. And some parents get really upset by that.

Get involved with their activities, encourage their imaginations. Read them stories. Sing songs with them...Itsy bitsy spider, Old MacDonald, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Five little monkeys, anything with actions.

Yup, pick em up, hug them. If you are asking technically how, then put your hands on their rib cage and gently bring them to your level. If they are too heavy, then sit down on the floor with them and let them sit with you, like on your lap.

It's good that you are doing kids right now. There is a lot to parenting and you are young and have lots of time. Enjoy yourself and enjoy the kids!

Well at 20 months they are walking. You just reach down & pick the kid up. But be careful & make sure that the daycare doesn't have policies saying you can't hold kids.

I wouldn't see a problem with picking them up. I'm sure their parents would want you to comfort them if they needed it, and if he's asking you to pick him up, he's probably just comfortable with you. If nothing else, ask the day care what their policy is.. if the other caretakers do it, there shouldn't be a problem.
As far as 'how'- you just grab them up under their underarms with both hands, and place their legs around your hip with one arm around them. It's a pretty natural reaction, at least I always assumed. When you pick them up, you should just kind of know what feels comfortable.
Best of luck!

Make sure you review the policies of the daycare. They may have a policy against this, or require it only be done in the presence of two or more caregivers.

children who are 20 months old still enjoy cuddling and being held by adults. if children are comfortable enough to be held by you, take that as a sign that he/she thinks you're awesome. young children can be picked up under their arms.

Pick him up by putting your hands to his sides just under the arms and lift.

If it is a newborn you put one hand under there bottom and the other supporting there head. If it is a toddler, put your hands under there arms and gently pick them up.

The child is almost 2-- I don't think it's really your job to hold & cuddle him.

Teach him to be independent & he will have more respect for you. There are other ways to give the children attention such as arts & crafts, singing, story time, etc. You can even give him a hug-- I just don't think it's wise for you to sit & hold him-- he'll expect it everyday.

Yes! At that age they still need to be held sometimes. If he is asking, take it as a compliment - that means he feels comforted by you.

Sure, just pick him up from under his arms and sit him on your hip. He'll hang on.
