Anyone can MAKE the team, they are looking for new kids all of the time. If you get up there and have completely no idea about it and dont even know where you are supposed to shoot the ball, then its problebly not a good idea to try out. Other wise it never hurts to try!

Basketball season starts between Halloween and Thanksgiving and ends about now. Both my kids (16 & 14) have just ended their season. Make sure of the schedule for the team you are trying out for before you just believe me.

Practice dribbling first - use both hands and set a goal that you can dribble the ball without looking at it. When you can do that, you will be way ahead of most 12 year olds.

Shooting is also important. Look at websites, with pictures as to the best technique. Find a technique you like and are comfortable with, then stick to it.

Learn how to throw a chest pass and a bounce pass well.

Practice these 3 things and the game becomes easy. Try to sign up for bball camps around home. Watch other kids play, especially older kids. Go to high school or college games and concentrate on certain players instead of the game in general. Ask questions. Have people show you how to do things.

Most importantly, work hard but have fun. It is a great game to play.

You can play if you want to, I was on a team when I was 12 and 3 of the girls on my team were what I call a brick wall...they couldn't pass, shoot, rebound, and they didn't care for the game, yet they weren't cut. You could make a team if you wanted, but before you try out get your stamina up and take shots and practice by yourself. Basketball is played all year, but normal season starts in November-ish.

well ... depends what team your trying to make; school or rec or competitive. any of these teams you should practice dribbling and shooting. maybe ask a friend or parent or adult you know to help you learn to shoot properly with one hand. not everyone on every team is amazing. try your best and practice. GOOD LUCK
ps if you live near a park.. go there every so often and practice shooting.
