No, you can transfer files that you have already saved from your pc. If you download songs from free sites you cam upload them to your pc. Or you can upload songs from a cd and transfer them to your pod. Download songs from limewire.com for free.

If you own the CD, you can rip the songs for free. If you want to download new songs, then you have to pay ($0.99 per song from iTunes).
