I mean what is the major content of these types of letters. In addition, what are the main subjects that I have to mention? Furthermore, are there particular formats for these kinds of letters?

Hi
The reference should be about how the employee worked for you and what qualities you feel the employee best displayed in the working environment
Headings could be:
Time keeping
Willingness to accept work
Ability to react to changes to work
Contribution to the working environment (idiot or thinking ahead)
Mannerisms - behavior, courtesy
Ability to work at different levels of the job and how they worked with colleagues.
Would they work on to finish a project.
And generally what type of person they were like.

Be Honest and factual try and highlight the good points. If you want to refer to a bad point say "this person is capable of" this means they could, but they didnt.

Hope this helps.

Basically, you write about his or her work performance, and a bit about his or her personal character. For example, what did he or she do at your company? Did he or she directly work for or with you? How long have you known this person? What "positive" qualities and traits have you seen? Do you feel that he or she would make a valuable addition to another company, and if so, why?

And a good suggestion is this, if you don't know what to write, you can always ask that person for some ideas as to what he or she would like you to say. If you feel comfortable with saying that, then do so in your own words.

But it's basically writing something "short and sweet" as to how you know this person, and why you feel he or she would make for a good employee.
