If the Cubs decide to keep him I'd say it's a better than 50-50 chance that he could be a closer. Any way you look at it his innings will be limited so why not use him in that capacity. I would think he would be very effective for an inning or two. That's a good idea!

Wood has a good chance to be the closer. It is quite evident that Wood's arm just isnt a condition to throw 100 pitches every 5th day, and he flourished in relief last year until the Cubs decided to shut him down. It is also evident that Dempster is garbage and is not suited to close. Wood has the mentality and the sutff to be a closer and I think Pinella knows this. He is in spring training right now as a reliever, not a starter.

Feb 28 Wood (shoulder) threw to hitters Tuesday, his second batting practice session this spring, and the Cubs right-hander is expected to get into Cactus League games next week as he continues to make progress, the Cubs' Web Site reports.

Recommendation: "He's still not as sharp as he will be, but you wouldn't expect him to be," Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "The arm speed is there, the velocity is there. It's just a matter of sharpening things up and getting out there enough and keeping him healthy." Wood is one or two throwing sessions behind the other pitchers because he needed time to recover from a bruise he suffered in a fall out of his hot tub before pitchers and catchers reported. He'll pitch in middle relief if healthy.

So it doesnt really look like its going to be his job

If he shows he can do the job I would say a lot better than 50/50. Wood is liked in Chicago and they would like nothing better to resurrect his career. They need bullpen help and if he could go a year without going on the DL, and bring the heat like he did when he was healthy, then they might think about using him as a starter in 08, but not this year. John Smoltz showed it could be done and Dennis Eckersly showed that it wasnt a hindrance to making a HOF career. But everything is dependent on his staying healthy...so lets see whats up in a month

huge thumbs up. he appeared solid popping out of the bullpen final 12 months. Pitched from mid-August till end of 12 months without discomfort or issues. informed reporter in an interview he needs to stay interior the pen and grow to be a closer. i think of he would be solid and that i additionally wish we re-sign earlier. yet another difficulty is loyalty. it extremely is extremely uncommon in activities. And Cubs administration reported wood became down multi-12 months deals for greater money to stay in Chicago. You gotta admire that.

I think he has a great chance as a closer as long as he stays healthy...He can go all out for at least 4 innings....so as a closer he only needs 1 maybe 2.

I think woods problem heart, he seems to get some minor injusries (mixed with severe) and take alot of time off. I know he good be an excellent pitcher, maybe even hall of fame if he gets it together, but he needs to step up. The talent is there but he has to bring it this year. I believe this is his deciding year for if he will ever get another statring gig.

Wood doesn't have the make up to go out and pitch to 3 guys every day.

I think its a great idea. They need to do something to change the repetition of Starting/Injury.

One of the biggest jokes in sports history is the Wood/Prior phenomenon.
