When and how did eating popcorn and watching movies originate? I'm just curious why they're always linked with the other.

Many, many years ago, some scientists spent millions of taxpayer dollars and discovered Salty foods make you thirsty. So, if you sell a product with lots of salt, people will by more drinks. Ergo, movie theater profits go up. As mentioned earlier, popcorn was chosen because of preparation and wasrelatively inexpensive to get.

Next itme you go to the theatre, ask for the salt free popcorn and save yourself a buck or three. Cheers!

I cant tell you the when...but as for the why...
Popcorn is cheap. Corn is one of the most common crops in the united stated, and since a cheap filling snack can be made from surplus crops, theatre owners found they could make extra income by selling cheap snacks.

Typically, the popcorn that you now pay 4 dollars for, only costs the theatre pennies. In the theatre business, less than 10 percent of the profit comes from the sale of your ticket. Why? Because the theatre has to rent/lease the right to show the film in their theatre. The concession stand makes up the other 90 percent of sales/profit, charging you high prices for the cheapest food they can provide.
