Answer: Enough.
Mashed potatoes vs. well-done steak: should the number of chews be the same? And are you talking "average" chews? Would you risk choking, just to keep your chewing operation in spec? Do you chew soup?
Sounds like you and your colleagues need to find some alternate debate . . .
PS: what is half a chew (4.5 times)?

Chew the food until it's smooth. That way it enters your stomach and can be easily digested. You don't want half chewed food in your stomach because it takes more energy to digest it. There are no magic numbers of how many times should you chew something. :)
Chew whatever food your eating until all the pieces are small and have somewhat liquified.

I doubt if there's a "correct" number. Just chew until your food is easy to swallow. I don't think there'd be anything left in your mouth after 60 chews unless it was very tough meat to start with.
Some people with digestive problems need to chew more than others.
