Not if you have a slot processor. If your motherboard has a socket 370 Pentium 3 (late model), then you can upgrade to a socket 370 Pentium 4 (early model). If you have a slot Pentium 3, then you're out of luck. The best slot processor made was the 1 GHz Pentium 3.
You certainly would not be able to upgrade to a socket 478 Pentium 4 or LGA 775 processor.
Edit:
Actually, I just realized that there were no socket 370 P4's, so you're just plain out of luck. Sorry. The best socket P3 was 1.3 GHz.

Yes, you will have to change the motherboard, as well. the P4 has more pins than the P3. If I were upgrading the whole works, though, I'd upgrade to a Core2Duo. If money is an issue, though, then, yeah, get the fastest P4/motherboard combo you can afford.

Yes, you'll have to. P4's nomally have different sockets that a P3. No to mention the FSB(front side bus) speed may not be compatible with the chipset on the motherboard.

You would have to change your motherboard at least. Depending on your system, you may also have to change your hard drive, video card, memory, and/or power supply as well. The P3 really is a completely different era of computing. I recommend building a new system.

Yes, you'll need to change your motherboard. Personally, I'd upgrade to a Core 2, but hey :)
