I have a grill that I would love to use again. Unfortunatly after sitting for the winter the grates are all rusted up. I tried to find replacement grates but no one seems to have the size I need. Is there any way to clean the rust off of the ones I already have?

There are a lot of different products you can use to remove the rust, like Naval Jelly, CLR, and even some oven cleaners have rust removers in them, or you can wire brush it off with a lot of effort. If you use a chemical, just be sure to rinse and then dry them thoroughly (to prevent the rust from coming back). Once you have cleaned them, you can use a rust encapsulating spray primer followed by high heat paint to keep from repeating the process next year. Also, invest in a grill cover.

Go to the hardware store and get a wire brush, clean them and oil them with vegetable oil. Cast iron grates should last for many years. Don't use soap as cast iron is porous and will absorb the soap, and your food will taste like soap. The rust itself is harmless, so other than the possibility of flavoring your food it will not hurt you at all, and if you are iron deficient could help. DO NOT use chemicals or paint (the porous thing) you cannot wash it out and you will be eating chemicals. I repeat, rust is harmless!

heat the grill, when you feel that its hot enough dip a wet rag into salt and start scrubbing with a continuous cycle of dipping into salt , when you reach a desired effect , do the same procedure by cutting some lemons in half and dipping them as well in the salt and continue scrubbing
