Sounds like Mother Nature is returning your bricks back to clay. As soon as the brick looses that hard outer "shell", moisture is taken in easily. This is why bricks used on vertical surfaces last centuries. The ground moisture is now getting in there and destroying them. Leaving them in the ground, even if you coated the tops with a water seal, still allows mositure in on the other sides.

Sounds like time for new bricks, but make certain they are molded and fired for ground use. House facade brick isn't.

Why don't you just spray weed killer on the walk. If no grass grows, you can sweep the dirt off, or flush it off with a hose. Then, buy some play sand and sweep it into the seams and broken parts.

I would guess that you live in a freezing zone. The water that gets in the bricks freezes and deteriorates them. As Fluffernu suggests, you might plan to replace them in the near future.
