I drive a 1994 buick century. the belt has been squeaky for a long time now, but its condition seems to be fine. it also seems to be properly lubricated. any ideas? again, it runs fine. it's just loud sometimes (even a mechanic said that it didn't need repairs)

I agree it's probably not your timing belt. If all of your belt tensions are proper it may be a bearing in a tensioner or idler pulley. 1st thing I would try is shut the car off and put some vaseline on the pulley side of the belt. once this is done and everyone is out of the way start it back up and see if the noise is gone. Vaseline will clense the belt surface where belt dressing builds it up and makes the problem worse over time.

first thing, its not a timing belt that is squeaking. the timimg belt is enclosed inside a cover, it has teeth on it and it does not slip.

next thing, DO NOT ever lubricate any belts.

your problem is most likely the power steering belt needs tightening or the belt that drives the alternator and airconditioning needs replacing.
