Museums are very important for the study of history. Most of the sources which historians use are documents. But museums give us another way of looking at the past by preserving and giving us access to artifacts (objects) from the past. These give us information which is not always attainable from documents and allow us to check what documents say against other surviving evidence. Most museums display only a small fraction of their total collections and have much larger numbers of objects than are on display available for researchers to study.
