I read somewhere that Social Security reserves the right to pay SSI backpay in quarterly installments (if the amount exceeds $10,000) - primarily for security reasons and primarily to prevent people from no longer becoming qualified based on resources. My brother was on state disability (bad industrial accident). He was owed a bunch of money, and got it all in one huge check.
I have heard of SSI disability recipients getting lump-sums for back pay.
