I had roots in my lines and the water backed up. Sewage came out of this pipe sticking out of my yard. It is unfortunately right off the back door and my kids filled it with dirt and rocks one day. IS this going to cause problems in the lines? I don't even know where the pipe leads to. I'm new to septic tanks.

Funny as it may sound that pipe is a clean-out. There is a T in the underground main which this pipe connects to. It alloys access to the main drain with cleanout equipment from above. Plus if your system backs up it acts as a relief valve......s ewage will come up in your yard instead of your house. Yes, the dirt and rocks need to go, they could easily end up down in the main line and you'll be having another clogged drain. This cleanout should also have a removeable cap on it. If not, get one. Also, if you haven't done so already have your tank pumped and cleaned
(@ $100) then have it pumped every two to three years in the future. Also, all those septic tank additives (Rid-X, etc) are useless and can actually damage your system. Take care of it properly and it will function well for 40 years or so. Sounds like this system has been neglected. Good luck!

It sounds like you are talking about a vent pipe, which allows air to circulate through the system and the water to flow in the correct direction. I think you might want to try and unplug the pipe rather soon. Pull out as much as you can, and then try to push the rest down into the pipe. It should lead to the septic tank, or possibly the field, where the dirt will not do too much damage to the system. And have you had the root problem corrected yet? If not you can get both done at the same time, and might as well find your septic tank and get it sucked out as well-cant hurt to have it cleaned out (should be done every 3-5 years anyway-and you cant be sure when it was cleaned last). Good luck!

Sounds like a clean out tap, but it should have a screw cap on it, and not be left open. The clean out leads back into the sewer system for your house. The dirt and rocks the kids put in it only add to the waste in your septic tank that will not break down into liquid form (thus reducing the capacity of the tank) I would suggest you have it cleaned out and put the cap back on it. You might also want to look at having your septic tank cleaned out too.

No idea.. all I know is that it is meant to be filled with water so as to trap the bad smell, same as the drains in your house if you have any.
