Just for comparison...central Tucson is about 1000 feet higher and 5 degrees cooler than Phoenix. My house is 1800 square feet and summer electric bills are $280...winter is about $260...while spring and fall are more like $125 (our "freebie months" when you open all doors and windows).

Some variables to consider...our house is all electric and we have a hot tub. Homes with gas furnace will, obviously, have a lower electric bill in winter. Also, many older homes in both Tucson and Phoenix use "swamp coolers" which cost far less to run than standard electric A/C. They do not work well when it is humid...otherwise they are adequate. Most people, once they go to "real" A/C think it is worth the extra cost.

I live in a 1200 sq ft. house in Surprise and my bills average about 100.00 a month. My lower months are Jan-April (about 50-90 a month) and the highest are June- August (about 145-190 a month).

They are high and you will use a lot of it in the summertime running your air conditioner and trust me you never will want to turn it off. Then another thing to worry about is auto insurance which is extremely high cuz Phoenix freeways are very dangerous. There are fatal accidents every day on them esp. I 17. To add insult to inury you are in a desert with a scarce water supply so you will pay a lump sum on water.
