Friedrich Miescher discovered DNA in 1869 and called it nuclein. In 1929 Phoebus Levene discovered it was made up of phosphates, deoxyriboses, and bases, and then it started being called DNA. In 1937 William Astbury proved it had regular structure, and in 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick used Rosalind Franklin's x-ray data to solve the structure of DNA. Also in that same year Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase proved that DNA was the carrier of genetic information.
