Pleasantville & Far from Heaven. What if life were actually a reflection of the 1950's censors' dictates?

The Hours. It begs the answer to the question: Can one live an unexpressed life?

The Age of Innocence. Life at it's most superficial and unrewarding, gracious and intolerant, most abundant and least generous state of being. The very naiivete is compelling.

Pappillon,Empire of the Sun and Shawshank Redemption. The effortless struggle to retain humanity amid the obsessive struggle to eliminate it completely.

Tea with Mussolini. For the intimacy of it all, amid a world wide turmoil, small pockets of passion and honor prevailed.

Sleeping With the Enemy. Hope will bring freedom.

Dangerous Liasons. The ultimate in human game playing.

The Gods Must be Crazy. A good perspective on the smallness of man.

Goin' South. Because everyone needs to laugh. Out loud.

PS I believe Tomtoyz movie is called The Beach.

I would say in the last few years it has to be "Irreversible".This is a foreign film with subtitles. It is played out in backwards order with the end at the beginning. It is about a man seeking revenge on the man who brutally raped and beat his girlfriend. You would have to see it to believe it.The camera work is nauseating and the subject matter is disturbing to say the least. There is a nine minute anal rape scene shot with a steady camera. In other words the camera does not move for the duration of the rape. Saying this film is thought provoking is an understatement. It also has graphic depictions of drug use and homosexuality.Check this film out ASAP.

Not so weird but thought provoking.....Hard Candy. It is about a teen age girl who takes it upon herself to track down and exact revenge upon a child murdering, pedophile by meeting him on line and using herself as bait. Thought provoking because it isn't what you would expect at first and challenges your own assumptions and prejudice. And the movie Tomtoyz asked about was Return to Paradise with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix and yes,an excellent thought provoking question of a film.

I can't remember the name of this movie but I still think about it. Three friends go to Thialand to "party", after a while two of the friends decide its time to go back home but they leave behind the bag of weed they all bought together. Time goes on and the two friends back in the states, who have gone on with their lives get word that the friend who stayed behind was caught with the pot and faces the death penalty do to the quantity. The only way the one friend can avoid the death penalty is for the other two friends to go back to Thailand and claim some of the pot was theirs, therefore allowing the sentence to be reduced and all three will have to do time in prison to save a life. Also, if anyone has seen this movie and remembers the name I would appreciate it.

Jacob's Ladder

It was about a guy in an operating room where they were trying to save his life....there was a war and the government gave the soldiers some drug to make them fearless and aggressive. It worked and when they ran out of enemy to kill, they turned on each other. The whole thing is done in flashbacks, halucinations and fantasy. Just plain wierd. I didn't get it until I was driving home from the theater.

Requiem for a dream, its very stylish despite it being an older film. It mostly about addictions people deal with such as obsessing over tv, weight loss, and mostly drugs. the sound track to the movie is definately worth listening to if you like a more dramatic kind of music.

Other movies I would suggest would be "Crash", definately a favorite amonst most people, and "Hotel Rwanda", based off true events and gives you a pretty strong idea of how people tend to see problems that aren't their own despite it being as grand as a genocide.

Memento - The movie is a about a guy who only remembers things for 5 minutes and those 5 minute chunks are shown backwards in time.

Being John Malkovich - A man finds a portal that allows him to control John Malkovich's actions.

I just watched a movie called Half Nelson last night. It was a very interesting movie about a white teacher in African American neighbor hood. The interesting part is that the teacher is really good and cares about his students but has a bad drug problem. It was a very unique film and I recommend seeing it if you enjoy deep movies.
