I am a bit worried as I am 24 weeks pregnant and am having unusual symptoms after eating. After consuming food I am very tired, shaking, having palpitations and have a mild headache.
I have a high bmi so know I am at a slight increase risk for gestational diabetes but I wonder if any of these symptoms sound familiar to any suffers past or present.
I appreciate any advice..thank-you.

It sounds like the same exact problem I had when I was pregnant with our daughter. For me, it wasn't gestational diabetes(I was tested several times throughout the pregnancy for g.d with negative results everytime), it was what the doctors called, "vasovagal" symptoms. For some reason my blood pressure would dtop a bit after eating and I would be shaky, cold (at times), have difficulty communicating and have rapid heartbeats.

There wasn't really anything the doctors thought they could do. I never actually fainted and because of that I think they didn't persue it as aggressively as they would have if I did. The only thing that helped me was eating smaller meals more often (instead of three large meals a day, it would 4-6 small meals a day). Since I was taking in less at each meal, the symptoms weren't as servere.

All that being said... while what is going on with you sounds just like what went in with me, it's possible that it's something else entirely. You should bring up your concerns with your doctor. If it were me and I thought that gestational diabetes was a possibility, I would ask if the g.d. test could be done a bit earlier than usual (it's usually done at about 28 weeks). At the very least, the doctor should know what's going on so that they can treat whatever it is to the best of their ability.

For right now, try eating smaller meals. Notice what you eat and how you react to it. I found several foods that never lead to what we called a "reaction". After you eat, be prepared for the symtoms. Try not to stand up for a little while afterwards. Try not to eat alone when you're out. If you're home, try to be in a comfy place either while you're eating or very soon afterwards.

For me, the symptoms didn't go away until the baby was born. Also, I haven't experience the symptoms at all with this pregnancy.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

It could be GD, the shaking and headaches are some symptoms. Contact your doctor to get a 1 hour glucose test done now, don't wait for 28 weeks.

Do you have any friends that have diabetes or had GD? If so, ask if you could borrow their monitor. An hour after your eat the number should be between 120-160. If it is much over that (like 200s) I really thing you have GD.

In the mean time here are a few things you can do diet wise that won't do any harm: Start having 3 meals and 3 snacks (B-fast, snack, Lunch, snack, Dinner, bedtime snack), do not go past 4 hours between eating. A snack would be protein and a carb. A carb would be a small piece of fruit, 8 oz. of milk, some granola bars, etc. If you are hungry in between try eating protein snacks - PB and celery, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews are best), cheese....

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 wks with #2 and at 8 wks with #3 and with both it went away 24 hours after having the baby. Amazing!

Hope this is of some help. Email me if you have more questions.

I was having the dizzy spells really bad a few weeks ago, they were happening about 9:30 am and were almost causing me to pass out. I made an appointment right away and in the meantime read up on GD, I looked up which foods helped control the "crashes" and stocked up on them. I went in for the one-hour glucose test for GD and failed and had to come back later in the week to do the three-hour test, I ended up passing that and not having GD but did have to see a nutritionist because my blood sugar levels were high and then dropping rapidly. Anyway, I am now on a low carb high protein diet and the dizzy spells are completely gone!! I try to pack as much protein into breakfast as I can, eggs, turkey bacon, peanut butter, I make protein shakes with whey protein and berries and keep small snacks of cheese, whole grain crackers and almonds by me all the time. You should schedule your one-hour glucose test asap, the sooner you get this under control the better you will feel. Best Wishes!!

GET CHECKED OUT!!! Those sound a lot like the symptoms I had while I was pregnant. It turned out that I had gestational diabetes very badly and needed to be put on insulin. Hopefully, with a proper diet, you will be able to control your sugar levels, but definitely get checked out. Good luck!

Get checked for the gestational diabetes. Although I think it might be your blood pressure. Be careful with caffeine and salty foods also sugar!!!!!! Eat right ok. Take care and talk to your Doctor about your concern so they can give you a test.

Symptoms of gestational diabetes tend to be:

thirsty all the time
peeing a lot
fatigue (yeah, but every pg woman gets that)
nausea (ditto)
blurry vision

Your doctor will be testing your urine routinely to check for this, so it would probably have shown up by now. Maybe you should make an appointment with your doc or midwife to discuss your symptoms.

yeah..that sounds a little like it. My mom had gestational diabetes,hypertension,hypotension..yeah she had the whole nine. But it all went away as soon as the baby came out. she just had her 2 months ago, and now they`re both perfectly healthy. i think you should go see an ob/gyn to get a legit diagnosis. hope this helps.
