I've had three and they all started at different times. My first and still pickiest eater, he did not want solids until 5 1/2 months. I did start trying cereals around 4 months. After about a month he was eating so much I switched him to 2nd's, and I think he stayed with those until maybe 18 months. He had 3 jars a day - 1 veggie/2 fruit one day and 2 veggie/1 fruit the next.
Now for #2 and #3 - they wanted nothing to do with that jar stuff. They wanted what was on mom and dad's plate. As soon as they could gum it, they were eating it (like 9 months?).
Every kid is different. You do not have to start with cereal, but it is easier to make small batches until they get the hang of eating.
If I remember right firsts are all single foods, and whether it be cereal or fruits and veggies, introduce something and feed it for 3-5 days (7-10 if your family history has serious allergies), then add one new thing and keep going. If baby does not like peas now, try them again in 2-3 weeks.
Take care - you'll do great!

I've heard the range is 4-6 mo so don't hesitate if you want to start introducing. I have a 5.5 mo old son and I started introducing at 4 mo. I feed him in between feedings twice a day. You can start out with stage one. I now have been using the stage two because there really is no difference between the stage one and two. The only difference is stage two has more qauntity then stage one. Just remember at this age it's only introducing and letting them learn they won't actually rely on baby food until they are older (but every baby is different)Their primary source of nutrition at this age is still formula so if you start introducing don't give them any less formula just yet. And if you feel at any point during the intoducing stage that your baby isn't ready don't be afraid to wait a week or two then try again. Keep in mind your baby has plenty of time to eat like a big person........

I am a mother of three girls, with my first my grandmother started giving her food at 2 months. I notice when the bottles were not enough and she was hungry every two hours, that was the right time. My other two girls started stage one at 4 months once a day. Each week was a new food to make sure they were not allergic to anything. Also start with veggies, if you start fruit first they will always want that sweet taste. After about two - three week start giving it twice a day and increase depending on your baby eating patterns and hunger. And by time they are 6 -7 months here come stage 2.

This six month stuff is NONSENSE! The range is 4-6 months--I think anyone who waits till 6 months is stupid. Babies don't start settling into a good solid datime nap routine and night time sleep until they are getting some real food in their tummies (I've had 7 babies, I know what I am saying). Start now with cereal, do that for a couple weeks, then feel free to introduce some baby food--start with green veggies, then orange, then fruit.

I started my 2 year old at 4 months only giving her 1 new food a week with the OK of her Dr. and Ive never had any one ever tell me to wait till there 6 months that just seems to be way to long. I get 3 different parenting magazines in the mail every month and every thing Ive read told me to start them one at a time at 4 months.

Usually you start out with rice cereal at 4months and once they are used to that and become better at eating you can introduce the stage 1 jar food. You'll know if your baby is ready for solids and if not then wait a week and try again.
Go to Gerber's website and they will give you hints that you should look for to know when your baby is ready for the next stage of foods.

at 4 months, its okay to start solids. i started my son at 4 months old on stage 1 gerber foods. after noon i would give him stage 1 gerber foods and desserts after. he would eat them, but would stay hungry, so i then got him stage 2. its the same, except, 4 oz. once a day to get him used to eating wit a spoon. i tried the same kind of foods for 3 days to make sure hes not allergic. every 3 days, i would switch the foods. i gave him dessert after the foods so that he ate both. then, about 5 months, i gave him the foods twice a day. at that time, he ate perfectly out of the spoon. and gerber has meals wit chicken, and mac n cheese stage 2. he pretty much tried everything. now at 8 months, he eats 3 meals in a day, stage 3. i give him cereal in the morning, and lunch and dinner, both wit dessert afterward. it keeps him full. you can start at 4 months to get your child used to the spoon. theres these gerber spoons that you can get in walmart. all babies are different. some require time. but my son at 4 months, opened wide. he loves to eat. start once a day, and if you see that the baby wants more, go to stage 2. stage 3 is alittle more lumpier, and has pieces in it, so thats when they are learning to chew and mash wit their gums.
good luck. and always keep a bib on them, kids love to make a mess.

my baby is 4 months old and we started giving her baby food about a week ago, does your baby try to put stuff in their mouth? that is a sign that they might be ready, or when they move their mouth when you take a bite of something,we give are baby girl sweet potatoes and she loves it. we only feed her one jar a day and it is normally at bed time then she drinks a bottle to get her the rest of the way full. she goes to bed at 9:00 and does not wake up for a bottle till 5:00 in the morning. just make sure your baby still gets enough milk if you start jar feeding.

Hi
4 months is fine to begin some solids, but start with cereal first for a week or so to make sure the baby tolerates solids.
Then begin with just 2-3 teaspoons of fruits and vegetables at a feeding. make sure you feed her the same food for at least 3 days in a row to make sure she is not allergic to it. Then you can introduce a new food after that and so on. After she tolerates the cereal you can begin to give her a fruit or vegie with he cereal for breakfast and dinner. You can add a lunch feed if she seems unsatisfied and looks hungry during the day.
make sure only one fruit or veggie in the beginning for a few days for each one
