Please help if you can. My husband got a transfer to K.C. from Ohio. I would like to have a job to go to once I arive in K.C. My problem is I have been very unsuccessful in doing this. I have tried careerbuilder.com and have had two interviews. I have had other employers that have contacted me for interviews but I can not go to K.C. everytime a employer wants a interview. I not only currently work but I also have a 2 yr. old son. I have a 4 year degree in business administration and I dont understand why I am having so much trouble trying to find a job. Do employers ever give preliminary interviews over the phone? If you can help or have any suggestions for me I would greatly appreciate it.

You should try going to the State Employee's website for that state, and any colleges, community colleges or businesses in the city you are moving to's website. I had to find a job on the other end of the state (NC) not too long ago, and found more jobs going to Specific websites than I EVER did on Monster or Careerbuilder. Try the ESC (Employment Security Commission) and look through google for the local newpapers. When you send your information in, note that you are going to be moving to the area in how ever many months, and that you would prefer a phone interview until things for the position become more clear. Or when they call you about interviews, tell them the situation and see if they will set up a call-in interview for you. You will need to know when you plan on moving to that area, when you know you will be able to start working, and if you are going to be in the area visiting so that you might be able to come in for a second/face-to-face interview. Think positive, don't get discouraged, and you will get a job! Good luck!

I think you are going to have to get lucky on this on. I have had two out-of-state moves in my 14 years in industry. My husband has had one.

The first one was me moving from central PA to Charlotte, NC. They did a preliminary interview over the phone (so yes, usually they do do a phone interview - why spend the money to fly you somewhere if they can exclude you right then and there?), but I had to fly to Charlotte for the final interview.

The second time, again, I had a phone interview followed by a trip to the Minneapolis-St.Paul area. I was actually the one moving my family this time (the first move to Charlotte was to be with my fiance, who is now my husband). My husband had to move with me in early June and 1 month later, he landed the job he has today.

Bottom line is....I think you have only two choices: either find a way to travel to KC for a job you are truly interested in (to interview) or move to KC and then look for a job. I cannot personally see that anyone would hire you sight unseen.

But I'm sure anything's possible. You'll just have to keep trying...and if there is an "in-person" interview you cannot attend, then you'll just have to turn down their request for an interview.
