The *simplest* way would be to trade it in on an RX-8.

Ok, all kidding aside, most people would suggest a K&N air filter. They do add power, but they don't filter well. You may have already gone that route. Additionally, many car companies are back-servicing their cars to use a lighter oil, such as a 5w-20 (check with your local dealership to see if this viscosity would provide adequate protection in your climate). The lighter the oil, the less drag it has on the engine: e.g. more power/better mileage. There may also be exhaust kits available that might fit your car and give you a bit more punch; but be warned, on a non-turbo engine they don't sound all that great.

Those are the *simple* things to consider. There's always turbo kits, cold air intake systems, etc... But probably not worth the effort on a protege.

a power programmer like those from superchips, this way you don't have to take the ecu out and mess with it, plus you can check and clear trouble codes. plus you can always reset it to stock later and progam for other upgrades. aside from that: forced induction as nitrous is a lame and destructive way to fry the engine "All Throttle No Bottle"
