Depending on where you are, this shouldn't be an issue... most snakes are more than willing to give you room as long as you give them room... example, eastern diamondback rattlesnake will coil, rattle, and back up at the same time... other snakes however....

Personally, I would stand still and watch it until it started moving on it's own, if towards me I'd back up, if away, I'd wait....

Don't just turn and run, back up slowly first and once you have gotten a decent distance between you and the snake you can run all you want. Most likely though, you will not be chased...

(note, in some areas of the world there are extremely aggressive venomous snakes... be prepared)

Stand totally still, move VERY slowly away, or try to make a noise (carefully!) farther away to scare it.
