I think it's because they have to get permission for each song. But yeah, it is really getting old. And I really wish they would ban all Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera songs from the show. Because every time someone does a song by one of those artists, even if they do a great job of it, the judges always say the song is "too big for them". I mean if the judges are always going to knock it, why even put the songs in the catalog???

The contestants pick their songs but American Idol must get approval from the artists and/or record labels before the contestants are allowed to use their songs. Last year Kelly Clarkson, yes Idol 1 winner, didn't allow Idol to use her songs on the show so no one was allowed to sing them.
Later in the competition the producers will select certain eras, artists, song writers, etc that the contestants must choose from, but not this early in the competition. Even then there is a big range of songs to choose from.

Singers are limited by what songs they can get the rights to, some artists feel AI is a sham and contributes little to the industry, and refuse to have their songs sung on the show. Last year Kelly Clarkson attempted to kep her songs from being sung, and was denounced by virtually everyone for turning her back on her start. Other than that though, singers are allowed to choose their own songs, from a list. To each their own. Theme weeks are the same, given a list to choose from. Typically the singers go with things they're familiar with or singers who inspired them growing up.

I think a lot of today's songs don't really give way to show off your voice. When everything's put together with the background singers and background music it sounds great... but as a solo song, most of today's songs wouldn't work.
Songs from the past, if you will, are better at featuring a singer's voice. They have a better melody. I think it's great that they are able to recognize the singers of years past and make it their own. Melissa Doolittle sang an awesome version of My Funny Valentine. It sounded great and with the times, but at the same time was vocally challenging... she definatley pulled it off!

I agree; I voted for Kris understanding that Adam became the extra useful vocalist and has a profession in basic terms before him even with the effect. I enjoyed Kris' track from early on and did not have faith he might win yet wanted him to so as that he might earnings self assurance and function the leap start up that triumphing AI might grant him. i don't have faith Adam mandatory the leap start up. triumphing isn't consistently the wonderful component for the wonderful performer, as then you definately could grant AI with a component to your earnings over the subsequent 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and are sure by potential of a settlement dictating what and once you are able to sing, leaving you limited in imaginitive freedom. Adam surely didn't want that, he's the main imaginitive we've had on the tutor and needs to be waiting to be untethered. Kris became by potential of a techniques the extra useful selection for my vote and could extra desirable than probably be the artist who's track i choose for to purchase.

All of the above, plus they use a live band and the band can not learn 20 new songs a week to do an adequate performance.

Probably cause the songs cost less for the show to use... I don't like it either and it cracks me up that they will make them all sing like Barry Manilow songs. Then slam them for how horrible they sound. Cause you know everyone who is between 16-28 is rocking out with Manilow...

I am sure that American Idol or Fox has to pay royalties to have these songs played. I am sure songs that are older cost less than newer ones.
