Hi,I am looking for any info on getting a job in engineering in New York. I have a degree in civil engineering technology (ordinary degree) and a degree in Civil Engineering (Honours) with about 5-6months summer work experience. I’m trying to organise employment from Ireland but its proving difficult. I will require a work visa which may deter possible employers but once i secure a job i can get up to an 18 month work visa with a possibility of an extension depending on the employer. I also have accomodation etc in Manhattan. Has any one get any idea were to look or any experience on this matter. Thank you.

Odds are you will have to get sponsored on an H1 visa first - and right now the US has already used their quota for the year. You may have luck if you find a job soon - but you then won't be able to start until October (that's when the H1 cap reopens).

You need to find a job first, and here are some sites that you can look to - these are sites US employers use:
- monster.com
- dice.com (great for technical positions)
- careerbuilder - they had a lot of Civil Engineering jobs on their site - see here: http://engineering.careerbuilder.com/jobseeker/jobs/jobresults.aspx?argv0=NewYork_CivilEngineering.htm&ArgURL=/en.ic/NewYork_CivilEngineering.htm&cbRecursionCnt=1&cbsid=19157f50d6e84cb89f58d9153559a65a-226334541-VH-4

- http://www.engcen.com/civil.asp

You're lucky you like New York - they seem to have a lot of opportunity for Civil Engineering Majors.

Good luck to you!!

Chicken and the egg.

All of this has to be started on the employer end, not the employee side. Sorry to tell you but you have to find the job first.
