Depends on the engineer.

But don't make too many assumptions. While nearly everything is designed by an engineer of some type. Not all engineers design. Some will monitor, some will manage, some will test.

As an engineer, I have designed circuits, processes, time studies, validation methods, machines, and computer software.

I've also been little more than a glorified admin assistant (paper pusher). So don't assume that all jobs with the title "engineer" are creative design jobs.

Geez, just about everything. Mechanical engineers design all types of machines, electrical engineers design all kinds of electronic items, computer engineers design computers, industrial engineers design power plants, water treatment plants, oil refineries, etc., architectural engineers design buildings, civil engineers design roads, bridges, dams...the list goes on and on.

In general, everything you can touch that's not pure art.

cars, laptops, travel mugs, faucets, chairs, pens, drills, prosthetic limbs, spacecraft, circuit boards, MP3 players, cell phones, hip joints...

If you need to figure out how to make it, how much material it requires, how long it will last, if it will break or wear out, what it will be made out of, if it will be safe... you'll need an engineer from one or more disciplines (mechanical, civil, electrical, industrial, manufacturing, materials, biotechnology, computer).

Flight engineer
Test engineer (stress analyst)
Drainage engineer
Nuclear engineer
Hydraulic engineer
Structural engineer
Software engineer

Reliability engineer

On, and on, and on.
