Like, how do you give a promise ring to woman? Does the guy do it like the engagement ring, down on one knee, with all the mushy words and feelings for her, or what? Is there a tradition or something? Where can I find info on this? My boyfriend is gettin' me a promise ring and he needs this info.

First of all, HOW CUTE!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I've only known one person who gave their girlfriend one and it was as a Christmas gift. I think generally it is a surprise, so he should plan something without your knowledge. It would mean much more to you then, and show his feelings.

I think he should just plan a special evening for you guys, and prepare a little something to say about why he's giving you the ring. Like how he feels about you, and his intentions towards you etc.

I don't think he should go down on one knee. That's just for marriage, and he's not really asking you a question, so I think it's better to save the traditional stuff for the actual engagement. IT will be more special then.

Good Luck.

Your boyfriend is getting you one and YOU want info on how to present it? When my husband gave me one it was a complete surprise. We were at a park when he presented it to me and not on one knee.
The promise ring is symbolic of a pledge made between two people. Two examples which come to mind are a promise of sexual purity prior to marriage, and the other is a promise of commitment to be true to one another.

There are several different ways this jewelry can be used so don’t limit yourself to just the examples in the above statement. The true meaning of a promise ring is really quite simple:

A promise ring is a piece of jewelry given when an agreement or oath has been made between two people and the ring is meant as a memento of that commitment.

The Significance of a Promise Ring
Promise rings symbolize a bond of trust and commitment between two people.
How is a promise ring worn – which hand, which finger?
Again, make sure you and the person exchanging promise rings understand what the ring will symbolize. They should be given genuinely and sincerely, with all parties being clear on the promise that has been made and received.

Which finger you wear a promise ring on depends entirely on what type of pledge you are making and in some cases – the type of ring. For instance, a Claddagh ring can be worn several different ways:

Worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward – it means that the wearer’s heart is free.
Worn on the right hand with the heart turned inward – it means that the wearer’s heart is taken.
Worn on the left hand, it means that the wearer has made a promise of love and fidelity.

Shouldn't he be the one finding this stuff out his self? A promise ring should be a surprise, not expected, and no there are no traditions related with it. It is just a silly thing high school kids do and means absolutely nothing in the real world.

A promise ring is given to a romantic partner to signify a promise to be committed in a monogamous relationship, maybe in which a young couple pledge their love for one another. The gift of the ring indicates that serious courting is under-way. It can be given as a symbol that a couple does not feel that it is an appropriate time to consider engagement or marriage but are serious about each other and their relationship.

A promise ring can be worn on any finger on the left or right hand, although ring fingers are far preferred. Most often it is the left ring finger, but due to engagement confusion, the right ring finger is finding acceptance in today's world.

High school class rings (rings purchased to represent one's high school and year of graduation) are coveted by young people of either sex. "Wearing his/her class ring" means that the couple is 'going steady' and that theirs was an exclusive relationship (if the young man wore a 'letter jacket' -- an overt symbol of athletic participation -- his girlfriend may be given that to show that she is 'taken').

Some people judge the seriousness of a promise ring by its value and by the size of its gem. Most promise rings as marketed by jewelers are less valuable than traditional engagement rings, with smaller gems.

In some cultures, young adults in partnership wear 'friendship rings' as a sign of their commitment to each other. Generally speaking, however, 'friendship rings' are uncommon except for the very young.

Also in some cases, but not all, a promise ring may take the place of an engagement ring in the most serious of relationships among young people. This is often because one or both of the partners are either too young to legally be wed under the law or unwilling/unable to receive legal waivers, required due to status as a minor/dependent, from their respective parents and/or guardians.

In certain religious groups, where the concept of premarital sex is shunned, a promise ring can be worn by a person to indicate that they have made a vow to put off having sex until they are married. These rings are then replaced by a true promise ring (given by the partner in the relationship), engagement ring, or wedding ring.

Other options for the symbolism behind promise rings include purely platonic promises: a promise to refrain from sexual activity until marriage, a promise to quit smoking, or a promise to keep in touch between friends, for example. In these cases a promise ring may be exchanged at any age, between any two individuals regardless of their personal relationship (from parents to children, same-sex friends, etc.).

There is no tradition for this since it is not a "tradition". It's simply a way for jewelers to sell more jewelry and boyfriends to put off a commitment. Think about it .....it's like saying 'I'm giving you this ring as a symbol of my promise to you that one day (but I don't know when) I will give you another ring as a symbol of our engagement to be married (but I don't know when) at which time I will give you another ring as a symbol of my commitment to you.

On the upside, it does have the potential for alot of nice jewelry! (Check 'em close....they'll try to get by with that cubic zirconia crap!)

When I received one it was a surprise. I had been wanting one, but he seemed to be ignoring it (turns out he was listening after all!) On our anniversary he gave me a bouquet of roses with one yellow one (my favorite). He had me read a card that said "smell the yellow rose." When I reached for it, he had tied the ring on to the stem! It was very sweet and very romantic. Especially because this guy was not the type to do such a thing.

You are getting GOOD advice in these answers, however it is HIS thing. To make him feel at ease tell him that because the ring is coming from him, whatever and WHENever he does give it you know you'll be thrilled!!!

also... in confidence.... get one for HIM. (don't u hv a promise for him?) SURPRISE him with it whenever and however he gives it to you.

A PROMISE RING IS A RING TO SAY A PROMISE TO BE WITH YOU ONLY YOU. SOMETIMES IT LEADS UP TO AN ENGAGEMENT RING. IT CAN BE WHAT EVER THE TWO OF YOU DECIDE FOR IT TO MEAN ALSO. TALK TO YOUR BF, WHAT DOES HE WANT IT TO MEAN? ITS COMING FROM HIM, ITS UP TO YOU TO ACCEPT IT.
