Now that i am pregnant, is it safe to still get them done? I had a friend that got hers done once throughout her pregnancy, but i dont want to harm my baby in any way! Please help!!

If you're just having acrylic nails put on, you're probably not exposed to enough of any hazardous materials to create any significant hazard to your pregnancy. Some of the chemicals involved can be absorbed through the skin, but you're not likely to be exposed to great enough amounts to pose a danger other than a possible allergic reaction and skin rash. Nor would the fumes be a problem if you were just visiting the shop as a customer. If you're applying nails all day as your job, your exposure is much greater, but even then the most likely problem is allergic reactions, which do force many cosmetologists to leave the industry. The few studies that have looked at pregnancy among cosmetologists have shown mixed results: One study suggested an increased risk for miscarriage among cosmetologists, but several other studies found no additional risk. It's not clear how to reconcile the differing results. The studies didn't differentiate between women who work with hair care products and those working with nail products, so even if there is a hazard for workers, it's not clear whether it's from hair care or from artificial nails work.

I'm 21 weeks pregnant and I get acrylics every 3 weeks like clockwork!
It doesn't affect the baby whatsoever. The only thing that would possibly be a problem is breathing the fumes in the salon .. but that's not enough to do any harm.
ALSO, the lady that does my nails .. is pregnant and due the exact same day as me! 07/07/07 and she is going to continue doing nails until she's ready to deliver!

good luck! God bless!

Yes you can get them done and NO it will not hurt the baby...(just wear a white surgical mask going in cause all the fumes are dangerous) BUT...I have to say, when you are pregnant your nails grow much faster. So, you will have to keep up with the fgill-ins more when you are pregnant then if you aren't. So once a week.

My Dr told me it was perfectly safe. I'm 10 weeks preg and before pregnancy I had to go every 2 weeks but now the nails aren't lifting at all for some reason, so I get to go every 3 weeks. however, I'm getting them taken off and going to just get manicures from now on. The fumes have been making me nauseated when I go in for a fill. Plus I want to take advantage of my prenatals and hopefully grow nice nails naturally! So to answer your question, its fine. :) Congrats to you and good luck!

Yeah, just ask for the little nose. mouth mask, so that u dont breathe in too many chemicals. u should be fine. i got mine done around 2 mos, and i started itchin really bad, but i think it was the acrylic or sumin. however, ive had em done since then about two more times (im 30 weeks preggy) and i'm fine :)) good luck and congrats!!

Getting your nails done will not harm the baby in any way. But beware - the smell may bother you more now.

I got my nails done all the time while pregnant, I just never got my hair treated....However, it was recommended that if the smells bothered me to wear one of those surgical mask things.

I had mine on the entire time i was pregnant .. HOWEVER my female obgyn also had hers done and let me know ahead of time to have my right index fingers nail removed ahead of deliver otherwise they would be forced to yank it off for me in the hospital because of the oxygen rate thing they put on your finger will not read through the nail.. OUCH i went in and my nail tech happily disolved nail ahead of time for me and replaced it afterward free of charge

my dr told me that it is absoultuly fine, as long as you do it after your fisrt trimester, which your just about there, since ive been pregnant ive gotten mine done 3 times (never did them before lol) the only bad thing is, with the hormones, the nails dont really like to stay on, and it drives me crazy!!!i cant take the prenatels, so my hair and nails are really horriable! good luck

It's no problem.

My wife and I owned a salon -- wife did nails. She did lots of preg. women over the years, and never had a complaint.
