in anne of green gables ...?

Question

did gilbert come from winnepeg then back to green gables to meet anne or did he go somewhere else?

more specific, in the first book, gilbert was gone away somewhere to like, visit his grandfather or something and when he came back he went to school and saw anne for the first time.
id like to know where he went.

There are many loose ends in the "Anne" books.

A lot just has to be imagined. - as Anne does so beautifully: "breathing in the air in a glade" when she wants to pray. Naming footpaths such as: "The Great White Way".

Why doesn't Anne understand that she truly loves Gilbert underneath ??? Only L.M. Montgomery knows that.

Although she explains in Anne of Green Gables that: she CAN'T make her characters do what they want. They seem to have a life of their own.

Wonderful imagination and amazing to see the Anne of Green Gables house in Prince Edward Island, accurate to the detail of having Anne's puffy-sleeved dress laying across the bed in her bedroom. With busloads of fans touring through the house, many with handkerchiefs at their eyes, seeing the incarnation of the scenes from the book. And behind the house is a pathway through the woods, with benches every so often, and an excerpt from the book on a plaque pertinent to the scene. Very heartwarming and emotional.
