computer oriantated? How easy is it to print pictures and cut and paste? No thought whatsoever goes into it and a piece of homework takes 10 mins max! No wonder the average kid can't read and write to a very high standard.

Yeah......kids use the internet just to save time. They copy and paste and they think they are done. But some children (like me),
paste and copy, but when printed, they highlight the main facts so they can show the teacher they have read it and understood.

That is a good question! If you are a parent, tell your child to highlight the main facts and info. Just watch how his/her grades will improve.

Good Luck!

It sounds like you've got a teacher who's not giving authentic homework assignments. Homework in my class is not computer oriented. Some of my students don't even have phones or TV, let alone computers. This sounds like something you should ask your child's teacher specifically (I'm assuming you're a parent, but I could be wrong).
As for the amount of time it takes to do homework, there aren't any conclusive studies that show homework as actually benefiting students. The new school of thought is 10 minutes per grade level. A third grader should have 30 minutes, a 9th grader 90 minutes.
My personal take as a teacher on homework is that it should be relevant and necessary. I don't give homework for the sake of giving it, which bothers many parents. The particular assignment you're describing DOES sound like a waste of time. Please know that it's either not the norm, or I'm the exception. :)

Theory seems to be that our kids need to know where to go to find answers and how to judge whether a website is ok or not. The test is not how much is in their brains at a given point in time. If they need to know something can they find it. If they find several websites can they discriminate between good sources and the dodgy ones.

Whilst this is a valuable skill, I would still be happier if my kids had a bit more old school skills.

Oh the good old days. Latin, the classics, weekly tests..........

I totally agree with you there. Kids today never really learn anything nowadays and hardly any visit the library to study. I am all for making my lad study but will not let him use the PC or calculator to help. He is 11 and I find his handwriting to be atrocious for a lad that age, but what can you do???

Good point.Computers should play a minimal role until children can do the basics in Maths and English,as in Japan You only have to peruse this web-site to see the inadequacies that exist.

The faster homework is done the better. We can research quickly and efficiently. Also teachers prefer the nice print work instead of non-legible handwriitng.

when i was in school (late 70's early 80's)there weren't any computers and the average homework would take 45 min to do.

Book reports and other reports took longer.

It is the generation we live in.

If you choose not to do computer oriented work there are stil libraries available and encyclopedias. Both of which are not used by students any longer because of the computer.

It is really up to you.
