There's not a whole lot you can do to protect your house. Tornadoes feature extremely high wind velocities, and will destroy just about anything in their path.

The most important thing you can do is get to the lowest point in your house, and inside the inner-most room in your house. Stay clear of all windows and glass. Bring your cell phone, potable water, and a weather radio. If you hear a loud roar and everything starts to shake, get low, cover your head, and hope for the best.

If you're outside, and there is no building in which to seek shelter, find the lowest point possible and lay down. Any drainage culvert will provide better protection than nothing at all. Make every effort to stay clear of overhead power lines, as those will be coming down. DO NOT try to outrun the tornado in your car, on foot, on horseback, etc.
