1. high energy content per weight, or mass
2. high energy content per volume
3. low byproducts of combustion (low pollution)
4. high vapor pressure (doesn't evaporate easily in open containers) but not too high so 5. doesn't happen.
5. low combustion temperature
6. easily storable at "room" temperature (liquid, not highly compressed gas, nor a need to store it super cold)
7. high specific impulse (for rocket fuel)

1. Easy to find
2. Easy to refine
3. Easy to store
4. Can be burned in a controlled fashion (wouldn't want something that spontaneously explodes, right?)
5. The combustion products can be easily vented from the combustion system
